5 Ways to Make your Photography Business profitable

Hey You,

If you have already read some of other blog posts then you are well on your way to starting your own photography business. Here are a few extra tips on how to make sure that your photography is profitable:

·       Chose a niche that makes money

·       Know what your good at

·       Know your demographic

·       Make sure your rates reflect what your worth

·       Offer mini sessions

1.       Chose a niche that makes money. This is important if you chose a niche that is not likely to make money in your area then you’re probably not going to make money. For example, if you chose to be a food photographer in town with only one restaurant for 30 miles it’s probably not the best choice. The most profitable niches tend to be weddings, engagements, maternity, newborns, and family portraits. People are always falling in love and getting married so if you chose to do weddings you will most likely make money. However, if you know that wedding photography is not your strong suit (it’s a lot of pressure to take beautiful photos that a couple should be able to treasure forever) then don’t pick that as your niche.

2.       That brings me to my next point. Know what your good at. If you don’t love sports photography (or maybe you do) but you know that you are good at it and could 100% make money doing it then chose that as your niche (if you’re doing it for money only and not love).

3.       Know your demographic. If you live in a working-class community of people who live paycheck to paycheck, you’re not going to last charging the same as other photographers who live in a community of people with a higher tax bracket.

4.       I have already discussed this in previous blog posts, but I’ll say it again. MAKE SURE YOUR RATES REFLECT YOUR WORTH. It’s simple charge what your worth but don’t charge so much that nobody in your area can afford you (see above step on knowing your demographic). You can’t charge 10,000 to photograph a wedding in a working-class community but you also can’t work for free or cheap. You need to make enough to at least cover what you invested (and more) so figure out what that number is for you. I made back the money I invested in my startup costs in ONE family session. If you are not charging enough that reflects poorly was well. You do QUALITY work. So, charge for quality.

5.       Lastly, offer mini sessions. Some photographers only offer mini sessions around certain times of the year, and you can do all kinds of research on how to set up mini sessions. They are a good way to make money quickly if you do it right. Pick one location, set it up, and charge a flat rate for a certain number of prints, and market it on your socials.

Of course, there are other ways to make sure that your photography business is profitable, but these are the things that I have learned from my own personal experience. Choosing my rates was one of the most difficult things I had to do but if you do your research, you will be successful. As always thanks for reading.

With Love,

Alishia
